The Branch has received calls from several members delivering in Chelsea, East Boston and most recently, Malden expressing concerns of the increased contact with officers of the USPS Postal Police recently. These reports range from perceived harassment to safety concerns relative to gang activity in these areas. Several Members have stated that officers posed multiple question such as name, route number and ‘how far along on the route are you?’.
When contacted, USPS management maintains that this contact is part of a national initiative to provide added security for employees delivering in increased crime areas throughout the country. Management further maintains that the interactions should be minimal and that at no time should City Carriers be disrupted or feel unsafe.
If you experience such an encounter with the Postal Police, you should fully cooperate. If you feel that the interaction was improper or created an unsafe work environment, you should contact your Station Steward or the Branch office without delay.
