Anti-postal privatization resolution reaches majority of support in Senate

A bipartisan majority of the Senate has cosponsored Senate Resolution 633, calling on Congress to take all appropriate measures to ensure that the Postal Service remain an independent agency of the federal government and not be subject to privatization. The resolution now has 51 cosponsors to go along with the 239 cosponsors for an identical resolution in the House of Representatives (H. Res. 993).

This marks a bipartisan majority of support in all of Congress for keeping the U.S. Postal Service an independent establishment of the federal government. This comes a day after the White House Postal Task Force released its report evaluating USPS finances and operations, United States Postal Service: A Sustainable Path Forward (read NALC’s write up here). While the report does not expressly call for the privatization of the Postal Service, it does highlight the privatization of postal systems such as Germany and New Zealand.

“Now that both chambers have a majority of support against privatization, any such proposal would be dead-on-arrival in the Legislature,” said NALC President Fredric Rolando. “Letter carriers should be proud of their hard work paying off. Unfortunately, our job is never done.”
NALC encourages all letter carriers to thank their Senators for cosponsoring this resolution and to thank their members of Congress for cosponsoring H. Res. 993, if they have not yet done so.

As letter carriers know, NALC’s priority resolutions will need to be reintroduced at the start of the 116th Congress and the whole process of gathering cosponsors will begin again. NALC will be sure to notify letter carriers when those resolutions are introduced.
